It’s time to pick up a tambourine, grab your guitar, and get your classroom buzzing with rhythm — because World Music Day is here!
Every year on 21st June, people across the globe celebrate the joy, power, and diversity of music. And this year, Musician of the Month is inviting every school to join in with a free downloadable PowerPoint, packed with fun facts, listening ideas, and classroom activities. We’ve even embedded the official World Music Day song from YouTube to help you get the party started!
🎧 What is World Music Day?
World Music Day — also known as Fête de la Musique — began in France in 1982 thanks to French Culture Minister Jack Lang and music journalist Maurice Fleuret. Inspired by a 1970s idea from American musician Joel Cohen, they wanted to celebrate music in the streets, freely and openly, on the longest day of the year: 21st June.
Fast-forward to today, and over 120 countries take part — from live music in public parks to school performances and global playlists!
🌍 Why Should Schools Join In?
World Music Day is all about making music accessible to everyone — regardless of age, skill, or background. It’s a day where amateurs and professionals alike can join together to celebrate the universal language of music.
Music has powerful benefits for learners:
It helps us express feelings when words don’t quite cut it.
It improves mood and lowers stress.
It builds confidence, teamwork, and creativity.
And above all — it’s fun!
“Music can change the world because it can change people.” Bono (lead singer from U2)
